18pt board is stiff enough that a small carton keeps square corners even when it is empty. That structural quality is why it dominates business cards and compact product boxes - the box arrives on a customer's desk without dented edges, and the thicker edge itself reads as quality. It also takes embossing and debossing with a deeper, cleaner impression than lighter calipers.
