Holographic foil carries a microscopic diffraction pattern that splits light into a moving rainbow, so the artwork shifts as the viewer moves. Patterns range from fine rainbow and pillars of light to cracked ice, dots and squares. Beyond the visual effect it is genuinely hard to reproduce, which is why it doubles as a low-cost anti-counterfeiting mark.
